Hi! I designed & taught 1st SM Course @ HumberPR

Profile Information

What is your role within the HumberPR network?
mentor
What person or experience turned you on to Public Relations as a possible career choice?
Sarah Thorne was at Dow Chemical & an advisor to Mount Saint Vincent's PR program. As I was graduating from high school after promoting rock concerts as a teenager, she suggested that I explore PR as a career choice.
What has been the biggest public relations success during your lifetime?
Trudeau Mania - broadcast ... Obama mania - social media but most profiles here talk about personal PR feats ... Sponsoring a celebration of the Hong Kong hand over in Shanghai featuring a $75,000 fireworks display over the Bund and a private black tie ball on top of the Peace Hotel was the biggest. Over a million people watched the fireworks live and millions more on TV.

Hi Humber PR! Nice to meet you.

Hey HumberPR - just a quick note of introduction.

I was invited to help kick start the adoption of social media across the HumberPR program by my old friend Chitra Reddin, who was one of my profs while I was in the BPR program at Mount Saint Vincent University. Thank you Chitra, Andrea Tavchar (who was my teaching coach) and HumberPR for my time with the program. It was a great ride.

During my first guest speaking visit in the first quarter of 2009, we noticed that there was no twitter thread for the program. So student Jonathan Laba and I quickly settled on the #HumberPR tag and started using it.

I designed and taught the first two iterations of the post grad level social media course for Humber PR in Q42009 and Q12010. FYI - here is a copy of that course outline. We developed this ning network and recruited over 100 PR mentors globally, who were each invited to help us evolve the course.

There was virtually no paper exchanged. Every student was challenged to work directly with an outside mentor to develop their online identity and assignments were submitted online via a shared google spreadsheet.

My MBA thesis focused on linking social media to corporate valuation and was published as a ChangeThis manifesto. Just click here and then hit the download button. No registration required to print or download the google docs version.

I am still active on the #HumberPR twitter thread and set up the #HumberPR Daily Paper.li to help keep the thread vital.

I always look forward to the continuing feedback that I get from my former students and the new connections that constantly evolve through HumberPR!

Cheers,
Michael

Report Spammers: They will be banned.

Thanks to members who reported a spammer on our network this morning.

The offending spammer has been banned.

This has now happened three times since we launched the network at the start of September last year. Not really a management challenge so far.

Just a reminder to be aware that this is an open network, anyone can join but that does not mean everyone is welcome. We are here for a shared purpose.

If you do receive a strange message from anyone or… Continue
